Redfern is an inner city suburb of Sydney. Located 3 kilometres south of the CBD it is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney.
Getting there and getting around
All Sydney Trains network lines run through Redfern Station with the exception of the Cumberland Line and the airport branch of the Airport, Inner West & South Line. The main line for Redfern Station is the Illawarra Line. A number of Sydney Buses routes including the 309 and 310 also service this area.
Lifestyle and population
Redfern has mix of lifestyles and demographics. As with many inner city areas it has seen a process of gentrification in recent years. The University of Sydney is close by (Redfern Station is its closest station) so the suburb has high foot traffic of students. Redfern Village is the name of an area that passes through several suburbs including Redfern that combines both pockets of public housing and also many new small businesses, cafes and initiatives that are part of urban renewal projects in the vicinity.
With a population of just over 12,000 Redfern has a significant community of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (about 2.5%). More than 50% of Redfern residents were born overseas, with China, Greece and Russia being significant other cultural backgrounds. The ix of household type demographics is equally diverse, with group households a high proportion at nearly 23%, sole occupancy just over 23%, couples without children just under 30% and couples with children around 14%.
